Massnahmen gegen Frauenschneidung in GB | Measures against FGC in UK
Bericht zu neuen Massnahmen gegen Frauenbeschneidung in GB. Werden sie helfen oder Familien willkürlich stigmatisieren?
http://m.taz.de/Maedchenbeschneidung-in-Grossbritannien/!143650;m/
Will new measures at all UK entry and exit points help in the government’s campaign to enforce FGM legislation? Or are African families going to be stigmatised?
“Wir sind Halb Teufel, halb Kind” – “Half Devil, half Child”
Großbritannien verschärft die Kontrolle zur Beschneidung von Frauen. Doch einige der angeblich Betroffenen wehren sich vor, was sie als Bevormundung westlicher Frauenrechtsbewegungen verstehen: “Wir beschneiden schon lange nicht mehr!”
Great Britain is tightening the control regarding circumcision of women. But some women from targeted communities resist what they call the stigmatization of Western women rights groups. We are no longer circumcising and we reached the conclusion without the headlines of Western campaigners.” Use googletranslate to have the German translated into any language of your choice.

My answer to Simone Schwartz : I was the only international journalist in London’s Old Bailey that day. In deed the statements our contact made can initiate new journalistic research. Our contact’s claim was included as a quote, a rare inclusion of the voice of the community about which many likes to talk, whom many rarely ask. I recommend reading the entire mentioned comment by Nadifa Muhammad in the Guardian http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/mar/10/opposition-female-genital-mutilation-fgm-prejudice.
The accusation that I was overwhelmed by the arguments is not true. I probably know the topic longer than Schwartz herself, because I dealt with it for the first time during my studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), now 22 years ago. IIn addition, being Jewish, I follow the debates on male circumcision (please do not tell me now, that the practices can not be compared, because I did not say that. But when it comes to the integrity of the child’s body, and the human right of the childit is legally speaking the same). Not only did I read the Times, as Schwartz puts under my nose, but the entire record of submissions to British committee of inquiry. Whoever wants statistics can easily find them, they must not be repeated But it should be allowed to to include the voice of someone questioning the stats.
She isn’t at that approving of the practice. Our contact defended herself much more against the paternalism and the assumption, that all women of Somali family background are the same and equally affected, for sure this would legitimize the work of any NGO, such as Saida in Burkina Faso. Our contact expresses awareness of the debate, and that the community is quite capable to participate in the debate.
